You can sometimes see Onigawara ( Japanese gargoyles ) on the rooftops of the farmers' houses. For a long time this has been one of the charms to keep evil spirits. They usually glare at the sky from the roof top. A father and son, the Tomiokas, has kept its traditional craft. They design Onigawara, and manufacture them , baking them themselves. The Tomioka’s products have unique characteristics derived from the sculpture called Tatekawa-shiki , which are found in . These days people living in remote cities sometimes order Onigawara to use as interior ornaments. |
